For the the advisor-less American consumer

Any talk about money used to scare the hell out of me. It was frightening not to have information I knew was critical to my future. Where were these magical solutions?

I tried getting information from Suzie Orman and Ali Velshi and Jim Cramer (host of a screamfest for investors aptly called Mad Money). They were all harsh, scolding, and angry. I couldn't understand them, try as I might. And I felt worse.

Tuesday, June 2. 7:00 pm EDT

Then I learned I was hardly alone. As a matter of fact, I was in the vast majority. I watched a presentation I wished I had seen years ago. No screaming, no shaming, just the basics of how money works for advisor-less ordinary Americans like me. I joined the company that gave me this great information.

Join us for the first of my WebTalks,
How Money Works. In plain English without confusing jargon, this free workshop will serve as an introduction to more in-depth topics covering the basics of protecting yourself and your family and de-stressing from money worries.

Debt. Saving for retirement, the kids college. Cutting your taxes. What is a 401(k)? A Roth IRA? What's the importance of Life Insurance and the traps layed by unscrupulous companies.

It's free, you'll get a complimentary consumer book on family money, and reassurance.

Hard Times?

The great Studs Terkel wrote one of his oral histories on the Great Depression. I wonder what he would think or write about our Great Recession. My friends, Joe and Barry, whom I talked with separately today, seem to have reached new lows in their individual recoveries from losing their good jobs 10 years ago. One at 63, must get back into the workforce and Barry is broke and homeless. Un generation perdue. We need a revolution, but one cohort is in the ICU.

Comedian breaks down in tribute to Letterman

Norm McDonald, not the sentimental type, delivers a touching farewell to the equally unsentimental Dave Letterman. I hate goodbyes more and more as I age. But losing Letterman means losing an emotional tie to my mother. We couldn't talk about much, but the latest Letterman antics brought common ground.

Elephants are fascinating. They have much to teach humans about family, overcoming trauma, and coping.

Memories still alive at Dodgertown

Thanks to Peter O'Malley (not his father, Walter) Dodgertown in Vero Beach, abandoned by the Dodgers in 2008 is thriving. Business and sentimentality can co-exist. Bravo!

Eva Goldstein and saying things you don't mean...

Had a difficult back and forth with a friend tonight. I had written a text to her saying 'I need a friend.' She resented that. I felt horrible, but thought back to Eva Goldstein, the Jewish grandmother I worked with many years ago. She was salty, funny, crude, but insightful. After insulting someone crudely, she apologized and shared her upsetment with me.

"Sometimes you say things you don't mean, you know?" A bit of wisdom I recalled tonight, when I found myself in the same situation.

Thanks, Eva. You were unique and very human.

A Bite of a Reality Sandwich for Tom Brady World

Seems to me that if you're a Patriots fan, all's lovely. If not, Tom Brady's guilty as hell. The Boston Globe's Dan O'Shaughnessy puts weak journalists/opinion makers to shame.
