I have never seen anything quite like the grief being felt by the majority of American voters who did not vote for Donald Trump.

Back in 1980, there was disappointment among Democrats when Ronald Reagan won. In 2000, after the long Florida recount and the intrusion of the Supreme Court into the decision, there were plenty of upset people who thought Al Gore, not George W. Bush, deserved to be president. But the losing voters in those elections were not despondent. They were not breaking out in tears weeks later. They were not waking up each morning with feelings of dread about what was to come.

This time it is different and, in my experience, unique. This is not simply a case of Hillary Clinton supporters being bad losers. For most of those who feel traumatized by what happened on Nov. 8, this is not about the candidate who won the popular vote, yet lost the election. It is about the candidate who was picked as president by the electoral college on Monday. People are mourning because the fate of their country will now be in the hands of an intellectually disinterested, reckless, mendacious narcissist.

It is not just Democrats. There are plenty of conservatives and Republicans among those feeling depressed. Their party has been captured by a man who has no bedrock belief in any principle; a man whose only allegiance appears to be to himself.

David Frum, conservative Republican and ex-Bush speechwriter, has been very explicit about what he expects from the Trump White House: corruption and authoritarianism. In a series of tweets the day after the election, Frum predicted that Trump will engage in “massive self-enrichment” and, once the media and Democrats begin investigating and criticizing his actions, he will retaliate “by means fair or foul,” utilizing the powers of the presidency and aided and abetted by a compliant Republican Congress.

Rosie O'Donnell's Trump-induced pain

Rosie O’Donnell is no stranger to Donald Trump‘s insults. She has been on the receiving end of them for years, but the one that came during the first presidential debate might have hurt the most.

O’Donnell has penned a poem opening up about the depression she experienced in the wake of Trump yet again using her as a punching bag, this time in front of an audience of over 8 million people.

Hillary Clinton highlighted her opponent’s record of demeaning women during the debate, saying, “This is a man who has called women pigs, slobs and dogs. And someone who has said pregnancy is an inconvenience to employers, who has said women don’t deserve equal pay unless they do as good a job as men. And one of the worst things he said was about a woman in a beauty contest. He loves beauty contests, supporting them and hanging around them. And he called this woman ‘Miss Piggy.’ Then he called her ‘Miss Housekeeping,’ because she was Latina. Donald, she has a name. Her name is Alicia Machado.”

“Some of it was said in entertainment,” Trump answered. “Some of it was said to somebody who has been very vicious to me, Rosie O’Donnell. I said very tough things to her and I think everyone would agree that she deserves it and nobody feels sorry for her.”

O’Donnell’s poem, titled “8 million to one,” tells the story of her finding the strength to leave the house only to run into her nemesis’s daughter Ivanka.

“Star Wars” star and acclaimed author Carrie Fisher says she knows exactly why Donald Trump has a constant case of the sniffles during the presidential debates, and her conclusion is the same as everybody else’s: cocaine







During Sunday night’s second presidential debates, a fan tweeted at Fisher asking if Trump’s sniffle was due to coke use.

Via Twitter, a fan asked actress Carrie Fisher, “Tell me something about that sniffle…coke head or no?” asked the fan.

“I’m an expert & ABSOLUTELY,” replied Fisher.

The Donald has been getting a lot of attention for his nose issues. During the first presidential debate, the Republican candidate was frequently sniffing. Social media quickly took notice and had a ball mocking his sniffles.

It seems like the only person who didn’t notice Trump’s sniffles was… Trump. The incessant sniffling was still present the second time around.

Fisher’s expertise on the signs of whether somebody is a cokehead comes from her own past drug addiction, which Fisher herself has never shied away from discussing.

Trump’s sniffles were a big topic of conversation after the first debate on September 26, and the sniffles returned for the second debate — thus the question for Fisher.

‘Horror’ of Trump causes Republicans to break ranks

During this campaign, I have considered submitting a guest opinion regarding Donald Trump. I haven’t because it meant putting friends on the spot for their support of him and would be difficult for me personally, should I decide to run for office again. However, my horror of this man being our next president outweighs personal ambition or discomfort for others.

Recently Trump stated our generals have been “reduced to rubble,” that Putin is a stronger leader than President Obama and that in reading the body language of intelligence officers during his intelligence briefing, it is clear they are displeased with our president. If President Barack Obama were willing to take over countries through force, kill journalists, create a government-controlled media, interfere with other countries’ elections through cyberattacks, cheat to win at athletics and use our country’s military to prop up brutal leaders, maybe Trump would think him “strong.” Watching Republican leaders condone all this has moved me from being irritated to feeling sick.

 

The Republican Party is the Party of Lincoln, yet most Republicans are unwilling to criticize Trump’s remarks on minorities and religious affiliation. He wanted a federal judge disqualified because of a Latino surname and would ban Muslims from entering the U.S. based on religion. Khizr Khan was right to question whether Trump has read the Constitution. Trump will quote it when supporting gun rights, but ignore it on religious freedom.

The final straw for me was his comment regarding our country’s generals. This man did everything possible to avoid the draft during Vietnam. I was in college during the first draft lottery. My number was 53, though I could not be drafted. Young men sitting in my classes one day were gone the next because of low draft numbers like mine. Their lives changed forever while mine did not because I was female. Then as now, I find the unfairness of this painful, just as his comments about Sen. John McCain were deplorable. Many of these generals served in the war that Trump avoided.

My relationship with the Republican Party has been tested over the years. I am pro-choice, voted against the marriage amendment, was willing to go into debt through GARVEE bonding to improve roads and voted against moving school funding from property taxes to sales tax. Through it all, however, I hung in, thinking there was a place in the party for someone who considers themselves a moderate. But today I feel far more comfortable with President Ronald Reagan saying “Mr. Gorbachev, tear down this wall!” than with Trump’s demand that we build one.

His business practices made him rich, but have left those doing business with him truly in “rubble.” He discriminated against people based on race in housing that he owned. He was fined for a “charitable” donation to the Florida attorney general’s campaign while she was considering investigating Trump University for scamming students. He refuses to disclose his taxes.
This leads me to this bottom line. I didn’t leave the Republican Party ... it left me.
